Lexical Information and Beyond: Meaning Coercion and Constructional Inference of the Mandarin Verb Gan
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper argues for the inclusion of constructional inferences in semantic representation of verbs. By examining the transitive pattern of the Mandarin verb GA N (趕) ‘rush’, it is found that verbal semantics can only be adequately represented if constructionally coerced information is taken into consideration. The construction [GA N + NP] renders specific interpretations that cannot be directly derived from the lexical meaning of either the verb or the object NP. The construction itself carries salient information for the appropriate interpretation. The ‘ellipsed’ eventive information is analyzed from the perspective of Construction Grammar (Goldberg 1995). Moreover, a compositional framework based on Qualia Structure (Pustejovsky 1995) is utilized to resolve the potential ambiguity arising from the construction-triggered meaning. By combining the two complementary approaches, this paper attempts to account for and represent contextualized information as well as varied meaning facets associated with a partially-filled construction. Lexical Information and Beyond : Constructional Inferences in Semantic Representation
This paper aims to show that semantic representation of verbs may require the inclusion of constructional inferences in addition to lexical specifications. By examining the transitive pattern of the Mandarin verb GAN (,y) 'rush' , we found that verbal semantics can only be adequately represented if constructionally coerced information is taken into consideration. The construction [GAN + NP] ren...
متن کاملEmotion in lexicon and grammar: lexical-constructional interface of Mandarin emotional predicates
The unique behaviors of emotional (or psychological) predicates have long been studied as a central issue in developing theoretical accounts for the interaction of lexical semantics and argument realization (cf. متن کاملVerbs and Constructions: Where Next?
Constructional and projectionist approaches are often contrasted, yet both incorporate the same important assumption about the nature of the meaning of sentences with verbs and their arguments, although they differ in how much meaning is allocated to the syntax and how much to the lexicon. FOCUS OF THE TALK: a facet of meaning that both approaches see as lexical, a notion of core meaning or roo...
متن کاملConstruction as a Theoretical Entity : An Argument Based on Mandarin Existential Sentences
The role that constructions play in a linguistic theory has changed throughout the evolution of generative theories. Construction specific rules are common when transformations are envisioned as tree to tree operations in classical TG. On the other extreme, constructions, as well as all structural properties, are regarded as derived linguistic properties predictable from various principles in r...
متن کاملA Frame-Based Semantics of the Dative Alternation in Lexicalized Tree Adjoining Grammars
It is well known that the meaning of a verb-based construction depends not only on the lexical meaning of the verb but also on its specific syntagmatic environment. Lexical meaning interacts with constructional meaning in intricate ways and this interaction is crucial for theories of argument linking and the syntax-semantics interface. These insights have led proponents of Construction Grammar ...
